Many believe that it improves our mood, heals emotional wounds, and also helps us find our mental peace. Researchers have supported these claims with various studies and found that meditation can help reduce stress, improve our health and improve memory.

However, what we don’t know is the detrimental effects meditation can have on us in the long run. In the past, studies have identified some drawbacks and negative impact of meditation on our physical and mental well-being. A 2017 study by researchers at Brown University and the University of California found a few side effects meditation might have on people. While it’s also important to note that more research is needed to prove the same, we can’t really ignore these findings.

Having said that, here are some downsides to meditation that you may encounter.

You may become more prone to anxiety attacks

Experts have claimed that meditation can cause anxiety attacks in people. Since meditation tends to bring back all kinds of emotions and memories, including trauma, it is believed that many negative feelings can flare up during a meditation practice. In the 2017 study, those who participated also showed signs of anxiety, fear and paranoia.

Increased dissociation from the world

While meditation has many positive effects on the mind, it can also induce feelings of negativity, according to health experts. This can sometimes cause feelings of dissociation and a reluctance to connect with other people.

Additionally, although meditation helps you develop an understanding with yourself, it can change the way you see others and prevent you from bonding with others.

You may lack motivation

Apparently, the lack of motivation can be the result of meditation. Since meditation and mindfulness encourages a person to live a life of detachment, it can also lead to selflessness in every job, personal life and more.

You may experience sleep problems

In a study published by the American Psychosomatic Society, it was found that people who meditate a lot were more prone to damaged sleep cycles and had difficulty getting enough sleep. According to experts, meditation can increase feelings of alertness and focus, the extremities of which can lead to insomnia and other sleep problems.


Physical symptoms to watch out for


The 2017 study also found that meditation was also likely to cause certain physical illnesses in people. Symptoms such as pain, pressure, involuntary movements, headaches, fatigue, weakness, gastrointestinal issues, and dizziness have all been reported in people who were enthusiastic meditators.

However, more research needs to be done in order to prove the same.

While too much of anything can have its own share of side effects, there is no doubt that meditation has helped and healed many people in the past.
