While hordes of Chris Hemsworth fans may be eagerly awaiting the release of Marvel’s next sequel Thor: Love and Thunderthe actor is currently doing press for another big budget film, the speculative thriller spider head which just dropped on Netflix. And in an innovative (and increasingly annoying) marketing stunt, Hemsworth lent his soft Australian accent to a guided meditation video to help promote the film.

And it gets weird as hell.

“Relax your shoulders, exhale intention with each breath,” he says. “Let your thoughts drift. Listen to my voice.”

So far quite normal, isn’t it?

“Imagine roots growing from where your feet touch the ground,” Hemsworth continues. “Trapping you. You can’t move. Unable to run. Get lost in the forest of your thoughts and the stutter of your heartbeat. You’re surrounded by trees and they’re looking at you through a prison of mirrors. Feel their eyes on you, searching, crawling slowly along your body, examining you, questioning you.”

It all starts to look less like an exercise in mindfulness and more like the actor trying to hypnotize you, or maybe lead you into some sort of cult. It almost makes you wonder what kind of meditations it offers on this Centr wellness app.

“Their gaze slithers over you like a spider, from your toes to the top of your head,” Hemsworth continues. “Crawling, crawling, he digs a hole in you, seeing all your fears, your uncertainties. You want to turn away from their gaze but the shackle at your ankle, your roots, plant you firmly in place. When you feel your fear has caught up with you, and you’re sure there’s no escape, open your eyes.”

It’s rare to end a meditation session feeling more anxious and stressed than before, so that’s at least a feat on Hemsworth’s part. It’s also a pretty effective way to spark intrigue about the movie. Based on the short story “Escape from Spiderhead” by George Saunders, it follows a number of prisoners who volunteer to be the subjects of a mysterious experiment at a remote facility to reduce their sentence. Top Gun: Maverick star Miles Teller and Lovecraft CountryJurnee Smollett star alongside Hemsworth.
