Integrated Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment Helped Most COVID-19 Patients Recover: Report
Integrated treatment of Western drugs and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has helped most of the more than 50,000 coronavirus patients in China recover from the deadly disease, a medical team of Chinese experts said on Monday.
Compared to those treated only with TCM or Western medicine, the team of experts confirmed that the integrated treatment of the two drugs can control COVID-19 symptoms such as fever, cough and fatigue more quickly.
The treatment effectively reduced the chances of mild, regular symptoms turning into severe or critical symptoms, in order to improve the cure rate and reduce the death rate from coronavirus, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.
The death toll in China from the deadly virus has risen to 3,119, while confirmed cases have climbed to 80,735, the country’s National Health Commission (NHC) said.
A total of 58,600 patients were discharged from hospitals after their recovery, the NHC said.
Since the discovery of the coronavirus, doctors in China and around the world have been scrambling to find a vaccine to cure the disease, according to the report.
On March 6, Xinhua quoted Chinese doctors as saying they found a good rate of success in treating coronavirus patients with some of the drugs being tested.
Chinese doctors said tocilizumab, under the common brand name Actemra, was included in the latest version of China’s COVID-19 diagnostic and treatment guidelines.
Zhou Qi, deputy secretary general and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told media here on Friday that the drug Tocilizumab was found to be effective in blocking the induction of the inflammatory storm.
Yu Yanhong, deputy head of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, told a press conference on Monday that the combination of TCM and Western medicine in the treatment of COVID-19 has been shown to be effective by the large number of cured patients.
According to official data, TCM has been used in the treatment of 74,603 confirmed cases of COVID-19 nationwide, representing 92.5% of the total, according to a report from Xinhua.
TCM treatment focuses on improving the body’s natural defenses against an outbreak and its own ability to repair itself while maintaining overall balance, Yu said.
Clinical treatment for TCM is personalized and targeted based on the differences in geography, climate and physical condition of the patient, said Zeng Yixin, deputy director of the National Health Commission.
A circular issued by the commission also encouraged the promotion of effective treatment plans for TCM in the prevention and control of epidemics at the community level.
